For Brandon McHugh, farming is much more than an occupation. A deep agricultural heritage has pushed him to utilize conservation practices in hopes of protect the state’s soil and water. His efforts to protect Iowa’s natural resources can further be seen through his role as a Master Conservationist for Harrison County. With both crops and livestock, Brandon understands the need to create a sustainable future and give back to the land.

Aside from his time serving with the U.S. Army, Brandon has spent his life surrounded by agriculture. After earning a degree in farm management at Iowa Western Community College, he began farming full time and helped establish Two Oaks Red Angus in 2005. Currently, Brandon has 150 head of cattle in addition to four poultry buildings. His diverse operation also consists of 1,700 acres of row crops and pasture. In an effort to benefit soil health and reduce inputs, Brandon began utilizing cover crops and no-tillage. With his major focus on reducing inputs, Brandon hopes to decrease his farm’s overall impact on the environment.

Brandon takes great pride in being able to supply needed products to people around the world. With an overarching goal of protecting Iowa’s soil and water resources, he continues to push the boundaries of what’s common. Brandon’s hope for the future is to see others follow in his footsteps, just as he followed his father’s.

“My hope is to farm better, not farm more.”
