Lucas DeBruin

For four generations, Lucas Debruin’s family has been farming in rural Mahaska County. Along with his father, Lucas works hard to build soil health and improve water quality on all their row crop acres. Their goal to preserve the land can be seen through their long-term use of no-till and cover crops on 100% of their ground. This push towards conservation came from the desire for the farm to be around for generations to come. In addition to growing corn and soybeans, Lucas has also worked to diversify their operation to include bison. Currently, Lucas hopes to move from large scale bison production to smaller herds that can be marketed on a more local level.

While Lucas’s father has been implementing conservation practices on their land for 10 years, Lucas is looking to expand their conservation impact by taking part of Iowa Learning Farm’s relay intercropping project. Through this project, Lucas is hoping to increase the output of his land, while creating additional benefits for soil and water resources. Though it is a risk, he is excited to see not only the yield outcomes, but what this practice can do for the health of the soil. As Lucas continues grow as a decision maker on the farm, he hopes to continually raise quality crops while reducing his impact on the land. Despite challenges, he is optimistic that Iowa farmers are acknowledging environmental issues and are working to make the changes needed to correct them.

Building a Culture of Conservation:

“I enjoy everything about farming. There are always new things every year and every year has different challenges.”
