Matt and Nancy live in Kossuth County with their three children and farm corn and soybeans as well as raise corn and soybeans for seed. Matt grew up in Kossuth County and started farming in 1999, raising cattle and custom baling. He then transitioned to full-time farming in 2001 after graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Agricultural Business. Nancy, who grew up in Wisconsin, completed her bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education and Environmental Science in 2004 from Iowa State University and her master’s degree in Soil Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006. She then joined Matt on the farm in Iowa and is currently obtaining her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.

Over the years Matt and Nancy have raised cattle and pigs, but now they only farm row crops. Whether they own or rent the land, before corn is planted in the spring, the Bormann’s strip-till in the fall with fertilizer being applied at the same time. The soybeans also receive fertilizer each year and have a light pass with a vertical tillage machine. A few fields are no-till depending on the year. The Bormann’s usually have cover crops applied with fertilizer on the land that grows seed corn or beans.

Nancy’s professional background is in resource management with animal manure and the Bormann’s farm fields reflect that. Soil testing is performed at the field level so they can make decisions that will be profitable but also environmentally friendly.

Building a Culture of Conservation:

“There are three principles that we try to abide by: good agronomics, environmentally friendly, and profitability. To us all three are equally important,” said Matt.
